People rarely follow their physician's advice when it comes to drinking their 8 glasses of water a day. As a result, many people do not drink enough water throughout the day while others quench their thirst with soft drinks, coffee, or beer. Most of these, in fact, have the exact opposite effect - they make you even more thirsty.
It is a medical fact that when we are thirsty for a soft drink, our body is in fact literally begging us to give it some water. If you have such urges for soft drinks and the like, it’s a signal your body is sending out that it is severely dehydrated. According to Dr. Klatz and Dr. Goldman, world-renowned authorities on disease prevention & longevity and authors of a many books, most people do not get the necessary amount of water:
"You cannot replace the health benefits of drinking water by substituting beverages such as soft drinks, coffee, alcohol etc. Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks can act as diuretics, causing us to urinate more frequently than normal. This can cause a general state of dehydration resulting in urinary tract infections and cellular damage."
Thus, water should be considered the kind of nutrient that can’t be neglected. Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D. is, no doubt, the most famous of U.S. physicians promoting natural healing methods. Almost all of the health magazines in America have published at least one of his articles or had his famous bushy white beard adorn their cover. In print are millions of his books. One of his articles clearly states:
“Water is a great medicine, needed to maintain a healthy body, a clear mind and good balance within your tissues. There’s more water in your body than anything else, with every cell containing mostly water. Over 60% of your body is water and you must constantly replenish the supply, as it is used up in the processes of life. Many people fall to drink enough of it. When you don’t have enough water in your body, cells start to draw water from the bloodstream. The blood gets sludgy, your heart has to work harder and your body starts to redirect blood away from less vital areas. Dehydration can set in even before you start to feel thirsty. This is a great strain on the body because it impairs the kidneys in their vital function of purifying the blood and helping the body get rid of toxins...The standard recommendation is to drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses [that's 2 quarts or liters] a day.”
Water is an important vehicle that regulates your body temperature in accordance with that of your environment. It plays a tremendous role in the fats exchange, eliminating fat through our sweat thus maintaining steady fat metabolism. Drinking enough water helps to reduce harmful bacteria in your intestines, frees your body of dead and decomposed matter, and washes out toxins and debris when you go through a clearing process.
The great Dr. Paul Bragg, the originator of health food stores in America and a pioneer of alternative and preventative medicine, in his long career as an advisor on nutrition and wellness to the Hollywood movie stars, showed that those of his star clients who were consuming the right amount of water, enjoyed good health, a youthful appearance and a slim figure much longer than those who didn’t drink enough water.
An eminent German doctor, T. Hoffman, writes:
“The only thing in the world that can truly be considered a panacea is water. It serves as a perfect means of clearing various orifices, canals and passages in the complicated mechanism of the human body. Water promotes regularity, softens and dissolves hard particles in the intestinal tract while clearing your body of harmful debris and additives. It also serves as a conductor of nutrients Into different parts of our body.”
Water is the most plentiful - and the least understood - substance on our planet. Water is the basis for all living things; without water, our Earth would become a huge dead desert. Therefore there is no wonder that 65% of the human body is composed of water and our brain is over 80% water!
The above mentioned Dr. Ronald Klatz and Dr. Robert Goldman state in their book on anti-aging strategies Stopping the Clock -
“Water... is present in every cell and tissue of the body and plays a vital role in almost every biological process including almost every biological process including digestion, absorption, circulation and excretion. Water is also the foundation of blood and lymph. It regulates body temperature, helps maintain youthful skin and strong muscles and lubricates our joints and organs to keep them in good working order. Yet, despite our need for a constant fresh supply of water, many people... do not consume and maintain enough of it for good health and long life. In those older than 50, the most consistent biomarker of aging is intercellular dehydration and one contributing factor may be a loss of thirst sensitivity with age.”
